Peter Vossen Builders Matamata Swifts have drawn a black against Papatoetoe in a match that, given the amount of clear cut chances created, should have been a goal fest.
This was probably the most open and least technical match in which Matamata has been involved this season. The blustery conditions didn't help matters, but neither did the tendency of both sides to push for passes and look for options that usually weren't on.
The half saw football played on just about every blade of the Domain’s lush surface. The visitors generally held the upper hand, though, as the Swifts struggled to find a coherent way in which to play with the strong wind at their backs. Matamata gave away far too much cheap possession, although Papatoetoe failed spectacularly to take advantage of this.
Papatoetoe fashioned more chances than the Swifts but simply failed to convert. Their most glaring profligacy came after the half hour mark when, in the space of a couple of minutes they twice failed to even hit the target when clean through on Tom Pamment’s goal. Only a minute later the Swifts went even closer to opening the scoring when they hit the upright.
After the break Matamata came out with more purpose, although the game remained an open contest that flowed from end to end. The Swifts held the ball better heading into the breeze and started to look the more likely side to take the points.
The visitors survived three goal mouth scrambles, while Glen Carmichael fired over from close range and Bevan Woltersdorf headed a corner just wide. Matamata also suffered from several cases of over indulgence when an early shot rather than an extra touch was called for.
As Matamata pushed for the winner the holes appeared at the back and the visitors were able to push forward on the counter. Pamment was called on to make two good saves to preserve his clean sheet, while top defending from Danny Styles, who made his first Matamata start, and Ged Parkinson, helped keep Papatoetoe at bay.
The very final say almost belonged to Matamata. Jason Feck cut in on the right hand side and drilled a dipping left foot drive just over the cross bar. |
