Peter Vossen Builders Matamata Swifts have defeated Onehunga Mangere 5-0 at Mangere Domain to lift themselves out of NRFL Division 1's bottom two and gain some much needed goal scoring confidence.
With the nearest thing to a fully fit squad the Swifts have had for a while, the expectation was the very least the side would come away with was three points. To score five (and hit the woodwork three times) represented a satisfying day at the office.
Even more pleasing was the overall effectiveness and composure of the Swifts' performance on a heavy ground which had already had a game played on it. Such surfaces are designed to catch out teams playing only their second game in four weeks as the Swifts were. Instead it was the home side who struggled.
After a cagy beginning to the match the Swifts struck in the 9th minute from their first real foray forward. In a classic counter attack, a long cross field ball found Harry Redwood one-on-one with the left back. He skipped past him and belted the ball home.
Stu Watene doubled the lead for Matamata in the 24th minute. This time Redwood turned provider, feeding Watene who pushed the ball onto his lethal left foot and curled the ball home. Matamata should have had more goals before the break with Alberto Romero twice missing with the goal at his mercy and Mark Knell seeing his dipping drive smash into the cross bar.
The game was over just after the hour mark, by which time the Swifts had doubled their lead. In the 59th minute Brock Kayll, who put in another strong effort in midfield, drove the ball home from 16 yards.
Five minutes later Redwood bagged his second with a cool finish after being put through one-on-one with the keeper.
Redwood's overall performance, as much as his goals, earned him the team's man of the match award.
This goal allowed coach Lowry to withdraw Jon Allen, back from a nasty foot injury, nice and early. Matamata saw both Watene and Glen Carmichael hit the woodwork during the second half, while Tom Pamment's only real piece of action for the day saw a fine double save preserve his clean sheet.
Only two minutes after coming on, substitute Jevon Williams scored an 85th minute goal, his first in senior football, to ice the cake for Matamata. |
