Matamata Swifts have wrapped up their Waikato Premier League (WPL)
campaign with a comfortable, although never convincing, win against
Cambridge.
The Swifts didn't exactly celebrate their WPL title in style, putting
in a below-par performance on what was otherwise a spectacular day
for playing football. That they did enough to win regardless says
a lot for the spirit in the side, not to mention the three excellent
goals the side scored.
Matamata had hit the woodwork twice during the first twenty minutes,
with Hayri Cihan the unlucky Swift on both occasions. His first
effort, from the penalty spot, smacked into the upright, then moments
later a twenty metre drive dipped onto the crossbar. Both times
the Cambridge keeper was well beaten.
Cihan got himself on the scoresheet early in the second half, providing
a cool finish from close range after slicing through Cambridge's
flat back four.
The match provided plenty of incident either side of Cihan's goal,
which was the second for Matamata. Man of the match, John Massey,
opened the scoring ten minutes from the break with a cracking goal
from the edge of the box.
Not long after Cihan's goal Cambridge should really have been on
the score sheet when an innocuous shot from 30-yards squirmed under
Gary Darkes in the Matamata goal and dribbled into the back of the
net. Cambridge were denied the goal by a seemingly bizarre off side
decision.
The visitors did give themselves brief hope with a goal midway through
the second half, when one of their players smashed home a great
volley from a corner.
The final period of the match was, thankfully, all about Matamata.
Adam Graham struck home a powerful shot to give the score line some
semblance of respectability and the Swifts were also able to get
two youngsters, Gareth Clarke and Michael Spencer, on for a small
taste of first team football. It was Spencer's debut and Clarke's
second run for the side.
Matamata now await the draw for the end of season Waikato/Bay of
Plenty Super League.
