Matamata Swifts travelled to rival club Te Awamutu in yet another
must win Waikato Premier League (WPL) game.
The side was eager to make amends for last weeks disappointing Chatham
Cup performance and come away with a crucial away win. Anything
less would all but end their chances of retaining the Simmo Trophy.
From the outset the Swifts looked dangerous, in fact they were nearly
able to find the net in the first minute. However as has been the
theme of the season, the Swifts were unable to convert the possession
they enjoyed into goals. Matamata dominated the game and scoring
chances were being created, however the precision needed in finishing
these attacking moves was absent.
Te Awamutu soaked up the pressure and were able to lauch numerous
counter attacks that kept the Swifts defence busy.
Finally after 35 mintues of play the Swifts were able to break the
deadlock, courtesy of striker Hayri Cihan who was on hand to tap
the ball home, following some fine work by John Massey.
Leading 1-0 at halftime the Swifts were satisfied with their performance,
but knew the job was far from over.
The second half proved to be a battle that has come to be expected
of away fixtures in the WPL. In many cases aggression, physicality
and fitness are the tools needed to succeed. This game was to be
no different.
A motivated Te Awamutu side had the Swifts under pressure and it
was hardly suprising that before long they were able to equalise.
There is a traditional rivalry between the two clubs and this came
to the fore when the Swifts were awarded a penalty following a handball.
This decision was one that members of the home team viciously disagreed
with. Not only did this cost Te Awamutu the game winning goal courtesy
of Ged Parkinson, but also two players to red cards and with that
any real chance of stopping Matamata bringing home the three points.
