After
traveling away such a long distance last Sunday it was nice to be
back on familiar ground.
Even though this match was played in cold conditions the game soon
heated up and became very physical. Cambridge is the first team
that Matamata has come up against that were not afraid to get the
shoulder involved.
But
Matamata, not wanting to drop their game plan, came out and played
some beautiful soccer. Yet again their passing, communication and
backing up of each other did not let them down. The centre midfield
of Leah Higgins and Nat Gaskell controlled the game pretty much.
They shut done a lot of the Cambridge attack before they became
a threat and provided a lot of ball for the girls up front, so Kerrie
McVeigh and Sarah Monteith were kept busy and very unlucky to not
capitalize as much as wanted.
Also needing a mention are Ashley Ferguson and Jaimee Morgan in
the wide midfield positions. Their games improve each week in leaps
and bounds.
So at the half time break it was 6 - 0 to Matamata.
The second half was a totally different story as Cambridge came
out firing the shots. They shut down Matamata's attack very quickly
and turned the tables by pressuring the backline and keeper. But
Matamata kept their cool and didn't buckle and managed to keep them
scoreless, although it was a close one because centre back Jenn
Wild was penalised for a hand ball or should I say an elbow ball
in the goal box, but the Cambridge striker sent the ball wide.
At the final whistle the score was 8 - 0. Goal Scorers were Nat
Gaskell - 4, Sarah Monteith - 2 and Kerrie McVeigh - 2.
Matamata Car Painters Player of the Day was Striker Kerrie McVeigh
who had a blinder of a game up front!
Thanks to the supporters that came out to watch and also thanks
to Scott Parsonage for stepping up to ref. Next Sunday Matamata
is playing away against Claudeland Rovers in Hamilton. Matamata
is still at the top and 2 points clear.
