What
a game! This would have to have been the most even and competitive
game that Matamata has had all season.
The
last time that Matamata played against Claudeland Rovers the result
was a 2-all draw. Matamata played the game with no subs on the bench
so from the get go it was going to be a hard game. Also there was
the knowledge that with a win today would have seen Matamata become
the out right winners of the Women's B Division for the season!
But, alas, it was not to be that way today. Throughout the game
there was a lot of physical plays for the ball as none of the players
were holding back at all, so it was a good thing to have an experienced
referee for the match - thanks Pete Ferguson.
The Matamata strikers were very unlucky up front with centre midfielders,
Nat Gaskell and Serena Jenkins, putting through the ball on many
occasions. The Claudelands defense managed to shut them down very
quickly which frustrated the Matamata girls even more.
All 4 of the Matamata goals were brilliant, especially Serena Jenkins
free-kick from outside the 18 yard box which never looked like missing.
Serena has proven herself to be a very valuable player when it comes
to scoring from that situation.
Claudelands scored their 4 goals in much the same fashion although
Centre Back Jenn Wild may beg to differ with this, as there seemed
to be a lot of mis-communication in the backline. But not saying
they played badly it was just one of those days when nothing seemed
to happen easily for the girls in the backline.
So all in all it was a well fought game by both sides and they should
each come away feeling proud of their efforts.
Goals scorers were Serena Jenkins - 2, Nat Gaskell and Ashley Ferguson.
The Matamata Car Painters Player of the Day went to left back Jo
Good aka "Chopper"
Next Sunday Matamata travel away to play against Melville, kick
off is at 11am and the team will hopefully come away with a win
and the division title under their belts, fingers crossed!
