The
Matamata Women's Soccer team have ended the first round of the season
with an away win against Tokoroa. This sees Matamata well clear
at the top of the table on 31 points. >
A beautiful crisp morning welcomed the players to Tokoroa and with
the sun shining down, it made for a nice day to play a spot of soccer.
With a full reserve bench to use Matamata went out at full steam
and definitely had control of the game. The Matamata midfielders
and strikers dominated the play so much so that the back line was
almost made redundant.
A lot of pressure was put on to the Tokoroa keeper and it was only
a matter of time before Matamata managed to capitalize from this
possession. New comer Sarah Hockley showed her need for speed, by
out running the Tokoroa defense and leaving them in the dust so
to speak. Sarah scored 2 goals in the first half on her debut match
for Matamata.
Ashley Ferguson did some great follow up play after the keeper fumbled
the ball and also scored her first goal for Matamata. The disappointing
aspect of the game was that Matamata were unable to add more to
the goal tally than they did. There were so many attempts made at
goal which just did not want to go in. At the half time break it
was 4-0 to Matamata.
The second half had Tokoroa come out firing and it caught Matamata
off guard. The Backline had to wake up and do some work. No credit
can be taken away from Tokoroa's first goal as nothing could have
stopped it from going in. The Tokoroa striker sent the ball over
the head of centre back Jenn Wild and keeper Jenn Hull and all they
could do was stand there and watch. It would have to be one of the
best goals scored against Matamata so far this season.
Matamata then seemed to lose their way. A lot of the basic ball
play was forgotten and the standard dropped, but in true form the
girls stepped up and didn't give up. So with some relief the final
whistle went and brought the end to a very strange game indeed.
Goal Scorers: Sarah Monteith -1, Nat Gaskell -1, Kerrie McVeigh
-1, Ashley Ferguson -1 and Sarah Hockley -2.
The Matamata Car Painters Player of the Day went to Bogga Jonsdottir
or as who we more fondly know as "Vodka". Vodka played her last
game today for the Matamata Women's Soccer Team as she is heading
over to Australia to play soccer for the Matamata College and then
she is going back home to Iceland. We would like to say a big thank
you to Vodka for her commitment to the team and most of all Best
of Luck. We will miss you. >
The Matamata Women's Soccer Team has another away game next Sunday
against Unicol played at the Waikato University.
