Matamata
travelled away to Porritt Stadium to play against Wanderers and
this game had a bit more incentive in it as it was the top of the
table clash and also had Matamata chasing goals with their total
for the season standing at 98 in 11 games.
So the definite aim for the game was to reach 100. The start of
the game saw Matamata not playing a very good style of football.
No-one settled and within the first 2 minutes Wanderers capitalised
from this and scored a run away goal.
Thinking this would wake up the Matamata side it almost had the
reverse effect. Even though Sarah Hockley scored an equaliser there
was still that doubt that this could be Matamata's first defeat.
Then it happened - Jaimee Morgan chipped the ball over to centre
midfielder, Serena Jenkins, who in turn just nailed the ball from
outside the 18 yard box to score Matamata's 100th goal for the season
and it was an appropriate goal for it was an absolute pearlier!
In the last 5 mins of the half the tide shifted and finally Matamata
began to play some classy football. At half time the score was 2-1
to Matamata.
Now, Matamata has a habit of starting the second half in a bit of
a lazy fashion and has been caught half asleep quite often but they
were awake this time. The Wanderers side may have only made it past
the half way line a dozen times, Matamata played the best half of
their season in this game.
The passing was direct, players were backing each other up and the
cover defense was brilliant! The six goals of the second half were
all skilled attempts that never looked like missing. Sarah Hockley
scored a real dive bomber goal from just over half way, Serena Jenkins
utilized a free kick from yet again outside the 18 yard box and
Sarah Monteith used a bit of individual brilliance to beat the Wanderers
defense.
So all in all Matamata walked away from the game very happy with
the end performance and surpassed the goal of reaching the century.
The goal scorers were Sarah Hockley - 3, Nat Gaskell - 2, Serena
Jenkins - 2, and Sarah Monteith -1 and Matamata's total for the
season so far is 106 goals in 12 matches!
The Matamata Car Painters player of the day went to centre back
Annah Mason who seemed to have found a 6th gear for today's game
and made some excellent cover defense tackles. Matamata's next game
on Sunday is played at home at The Domain against Taumuranui. Kick
off is at 11am.
