Hamilton
North arrived at the ground short of numbers as opposed to the Swifts
who had 15 to choose from. As often happens when playing a depleted
side the Swifts struggled to put them away.
The first goal didn't arrive to the 40th minute although the goal
had been peppered. Jamie Cox finally got one in the net to put the
team on the way. Mark Darkes found acres of space to play in behind
the front runners. Joel Chamberlain never gave up in trying to burst
the net although the Catholic church was in more danger. David Hyslop
came on in the second half after breath testing.
A debut was also given to Glynn in goal. I lent him some boots which
he somehow mistook for iceskates and spent more time horizontal
than vertical. He also showed a penchant for giving away penalties.
The first one he slipped (again) and their diminutive (ok short)
forward fell over him. Neil Evans, a fan of English penalty taking,
stepped up to blast one over the bar. This was retaken, as Mark
attempted to join him on the penalty spot before he had kicked it.
Neil also manged to butcher this one hitting it (sort of) straight
at the keeper.
Meanwhile Jamie Cox managed to score another two and Jono Monteith
one. Hamilton scored a consolation goal and with the last kick of
the game the goalie decided to give them another chance. Neil, surprisingly,
didn't step up to take this one. However the taker had studied his
technique and blasted the ball into the netball courts.
In their after match speech they blamed the surface for this penlty
taking display. As people used to playing on the pristine surface
of Ashurst Park I can understand this. Three welcome points for
the Swifts and a spirited display by Hamilton North.
