Otorohanga 2 v Matamata Swifts 1

Missing five players from the previous weeks line up Matamata were on the back foot right from the start on their visit to the high scoring Otorohanga side. Matamata were looking to the experience in their side to counter the quick and young home side. Centrebacks Adam Graham and Eric Van Waveren were dealing comfortably with Otorohanga's attacks with keeper Ian Moody sound in goal despite carrying an injury.

It was the Swift's who took the lead midway through the first half when from a freekick the ball fell invitingly to Gary Ewing who volleyed home leaving the keeper flatfooted. The Swift's lost this psychological advantage when Otorohanga equalized in the last few seconds of the half.

Such was the workrate of the Swift's players that it wasn't until half time that the opposition worked out that the Swift's only had ten players on the field. This began to take it's toll later in the second half along with more than a few perplexing refereeing decisions as Otorohanga tried to exploit its advantage. Matamata were still able to press forward and create opportunities with Gary Ewing, Aiden Miller and even Barrie Randall covering many a mile in midfield.

Matamata held tight until fifteen minutes from the end when a moments hesitation saw Otorohanga score the deciding goal. The Swift's gutsy 10 man effort could not be faulted on the day and were perhaps unlucky not to earn a draw from the match.

Swifts XI 1-Ian Moody; 10-Ryan Carter, 14-Eric Van Waveren, 2-Adam Graham, 12-David Mann; 8-Barrie Randall, 7-Aidan Miller, 5-Garry Ewing, 4-Colin Taylor; 9-Billy Garcia.
