Matamata Swifts 0 v Wanderers 2

The Swifts shortage of goals continued when they slumped to a home loss against Wanderers on Saturday.

Matamata had started the day hoping for a win as a send off for Garry Ewing before his return to Northern Ireland. Both Matamata and Wanderers have suffered from a lack of goals this season but two long range goals swung the game Wanderers way.

The first after twenty minutes seemed a speculative shot but it dropped neatly under the crossbar to give Wanderers the lead a little against the run of play with the Swifts defensive line having been sound up to that stage. That acted to boost the visitor's confidence and the odd wrong option taken and failure to finish proved costly as the Swifts could not find an equalizer in the first half.

The second half was again even with the Swifts having a few opportunities and the Wanderers keeper in good form. Wanderers second goal, a good strike from 20 metres out, ten minutes from the end effectively sealed the match leaving the Swifts frustrated at not been able to find that final killer touch up front.

The Swifts player of the day was centre back Gwyn Hughes with his customary solid defence ably supported by his backline of Eric Van Waveren, Neil Wiseman, Colin Taylor and Ryan Carter.

Swifts XI 1-Ian Moody; 13-Neil Wiseman, 14-Eric Van Waveren, 5-Gwyn Hughes; 2-Ryan Carter (12-Joe Alves 60m), 6-Garry Ewing, 7-Bevan Shelley, 8-Aidan Miller, 4-Colin Taylor; 9-Adam Graham (11-Andre Bos 60m), 10-Billy Garcia.
